Three Indian Institutions figure in THE World University Rankings 2012-13
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2012-13 has ranked three Indian institutions in the list of top 400 universities across the globe. The three institutions are Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) namely IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee. Last year, IIT Bombay was the only one institution from India that was able to make it to the list.
THE World ranking is regarded among the best ranking systems in the world and the data is collected and analysed by Thomson Reuters. Though none of the Indian higher education institutions were able to make it to the top 200 in the rankings of 2012-13 but this year IIT Kharagpur stands at 234 rank. However, previous year’s ranking it was nowhere in the top 400. IIT Bombay has jumped 60 positions and has been ranked at 258 registering considerable improvement from last year’s rank at 317. IIT Roorkee, which is ranked at 367 in the world, was nowhere in the list of top 400 institutions last year.   
Times Higher Education World University Rankings judges universities on parameters such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook based on 13 calibrated performance indicators. Teaching and learning environment gets 30 per cent while Research in terms of volume, income and reputation also counts for 30 per cent and Citations in terms of research influence is worth 30 per cent of the overall ranking score. On the other hand industry income by innovation is worth 2.5 per cent and international outlook of the university which include staff, students and research gets 7.5 per cent weightage.
It is again California Institute of Technology which has retained its number one position with overall score of 95.5 better than last year which was 94.8. University of Oxford has jumped three positions from last year’s fourth to this year sharing second spot with Stanford University with an overall score of 93.7. Harvard University has slipped three positions from last year’s second sport to fourth this year with overall score of 93.6. the rest of the institutions have retained their spot among the top 10 universities are Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, University of Chicago and University of California.
